Cooking Up History

Cooking with Jenn-Air is an important primary source as it shows us the newly modern steps American culture took towards cooking and the ways traditional meals could be altered in preparing and cooking the meal. This book tells us how cooking quickly revolutionizing during the late 20th century as new residential equipment and cooking methods were being introduced from European practices and technology into American society. The convection oven was highly popular in Europe due to the outcome of how the meals turned out. America caught on to these practices and Jenn-Air introduced new cooking equipment and methods for people to try at home.

The race to speed up cooking as only intensified within North America during the 20th century as family life only got busier and busier. The creation of residential convection ovens has greatly improved cooking food much faster and saving families the time spent in the kitchen (Bendall, 2000). As the race to speed up cooking only got faster and grew in demand, the introduction of convection cooking significantly helped families go on with their busy lives without sacrificing too much time spent cooking. Along with this, companies such as Jenn-Air were constantly releasing new residential cooking equipment in order to fit the changing lifestyle of American families.

As the 1900s went by, women slowly became more and more independent to men and by the end of the century you could not tell the difference between what gender made up the majority of the working class ( It became common through the 80s that married women now worked and provided a separate income to the family. As women were traditionally the main cooks of the family, this made it much harder for constantly cooking meals at home which is why the introduction of residential cooking equipment was so revolutionary and so important. It made cooking much simpler as families did not have as much time to cook. According to a study, the introduction of cooking appliances revolutionized the 20th century as working women became a majority, these changes to cooking adopted a simple and practical approach to home life (Shapiro, 1997). Regardless this cookbook is still relevant and can be used present day as it is very similar to current modern-day cookbooks the only difference would be the outdated equipment used back in the 1980s.

It may be relevant that Jenn-Air’s target was to introduce a new way for families to spice up cooking at home with convection cooking which quickly grew in popularity for Americans as it was seen very popular and favoured in Europe. This cookbook might have even been targeted towards young couples looking to purchase a home together along with new appliances as this book would have paired perfectly with Jenn-Air’s residential cooking equipment such as the convection oven. Additionally, this cookbook was aimed towards people in the market for Jenn-Air equipment. It was very common after the 1950s for residential appliance companies to make cookbooks that complemented their equipment made for cooking (Rosendaal, 2018). This was very smart as it attracted many people to not only purchase their equipment, but also to purchase their cookbook and try out the recipes as the convection oven was intended for.
