Introduction

“Liberty Cookbook: Say Cheese Please!” or “Liberté Recettes: Au Fromage S.V.P!” as it’s included French version is titled, is a cookbook published in 1984 by Liberty Brand Products Inc. based out of Brossard Quebec. Liberty Brand Products Inc., as it was known then, is a Quebec based dairy company producing a variety of products from whole milk to yogurt. It was purchased by Yoplait in 2010 and continues under the Liberty name. The cookbook’s author, Norene Gilletz, is a well-known cookbook creator and culinary enthusiast. As the title suggests, the recipes provide a total of fifty dairy-based dishes that one can cook from home. The introduction states that the included recipes “have been developed to use Liberty high quality products”, making its purpose as marketing material clear. This cookbook offers us a variety of historical perspectives. It provides a glimpse into the ingredients and food-preparation methods utilized by Canadian families during that time. It likewise serves as an example of corporate marketing. Finally, the cookbook reflects on the life and work of a beloved author.
