Introduction

Its In To Be Thin, by Lois Lyons Lindauer, published in 1970, is a cookbook intended to promote a healthy lifestyle without resorting to radical diet fads popular during its time of publication. Through healthy recipes, exercise and diet plans, and stories from her own personal weight struggles, Lindauer aims to show “that all men, women, and children are created with an equal right to be thin”[1] and how they can maintain this healthy lifestyle. The ingredients in the recipes Lindauer includes in Its In To Be Thin, are balanced and nutritious, consisting of foods that were commonly found in most households back then.  From snacks to full-course dinners, Lindauer’s recipes promote her belief that everyone can be healthy and don't have to ascribe to diet fads like weight loss pills to do so. Lindauer’s openness and vulnerability, shown in the stories of her own weight loss struggles, allow the reader to connect on a personal level and learn from this cookbook. By sharing her own struggles with dieting, Lindauer makes it easier for readers to want to follow her diet plans and recipes as her story gives the readers a true first-hand account of its success. Unlike a lot of fitness and lifestyle cookbooks, Its In To Be Thin, focuses not just on eating healthy and exercising, but also what it means to live healthy and to understand the reasons behind the causes of unhealthy lifestyles, like obesity and illnesses.
