Introduction

The unconscious vicious and unhealthy habits of dieting were introduced in the late 1980s and gained popularity in the 1990s. Terminologies such as: low-fat diets, dieting pills, and meal replacement drinks were all over the headlines. No one really was aware of the proper structure of a healthy diet , nor what a healthy body image looked like, instead skin and bones took the lead in beauty standards. Norene Gilletz wrote and published "Meal Leani Yumm!" in the late 1990s, for the sole purpose of encouraging people to make healthy meals. All recipes included knowledge about the different micro and macronutrients, as well as being easy to prepare and alternate according to personal specifications. The cookbook’s primary audience was and still is people dealing with high cholesterol, heart problems and just overall having a healthy relationship with rainbow foods. For each recipe Gilletz includes a set of nutritional facts and recommended adjustments that can be made to suit the consumer’s preferences. At the beginning of each category of dishes, she includes a little glossary for different kitchen terminology, advice for storing the food for a longer period of time, and acknowledges different spices and their pairings with foods.

With her Jewish background, all of Norene Gilletz’s cookbooks were based on kosher dishes, including the recipes in "Meal Leani Yumm!". According to scientific researches, most people choose kosher diet, eating habits as it follows set of rules, and has proven to be sustainable and maintainable in the long run.
